|Post subject:||Godfrey Reggio on non-narrative filmmaking|
This quote arose from an ongoing discussion with Godfrey about the importance of evoking emotion in non-narrative filmmaking. After I saw SAMSARA, I called Godfrey and reported to him that the film had a strong emotional impact on me... a much stronger emotional punch than from BARAKA, for example. Whereas BARAKA had generated spiritual feelings in me, and feelings of awe, SAMSARA struck on an emotional level, so much so that by the end of the film, I had a lump in my throat and was fighting back tears. Godfrey said, "Oh wonderful... then Ron has really done it." Godfrey went on to explain that films like KOYAANISQATSI are not designed to appeal to the intellect, or to tell a story, or to make a point... but rather, their highest goal is to evoke an emotional response in the viewer.... to let the viewer make their own point. Godfrey and I started this conversation when I was already halfway through my edit on TIMESCAPES. Thankfully, I was already pursuing a similar path with the TIMESCAPES edit, and Godfrey's words only further solidified my notion to continue down this route.

Great words and inspiration from a master.... It's like the perfect description of what we hope to achieve by making non-narrative films, regardless of the subject matter or duration. Will share. Thanks.
