Some bird shots with an 820mm FL astro telescope
I had an idea to try something different - see if I can use one of my astro scopes (a Takahashi FS102) with my 40D as an 820mm F/8 telephoto. I mounted the scope clumsily on a Celestron NexStar 5SE mount. Since the scope doesn't have autofocus, I had to use the 40D's live focus. I pointed the scope at a birdfeeder about 50 feet away and had at it. Mountain ChickadeePygmy NuthatchPine SiskenWoodpeckerWoodpeckerScope & camera

820mm, does that include the crop factor? They look sharp but what about at full res?

They are impressively sharp. Something these photos illustrate is the influence lenses have on colors - obviously, color fidelity wasn't the main priority when designing this one.

These were shot on a very overcast day and whatever color temp. the camera decided, so I'm not so sure these are a very good indication of the color fidelity of the lens. That said, it was designed as an astronomical scope and not as a telephoto lens for terrestrial photography, so it wouldn't surprise me if color fidelity was very low priority.

Exactly - it wasn't meant as a criticism of the telescope or the photos. Dean wrote: whatever color temp. the camera decided Can you check exif for white balance? The uploaded photos have no exif.
