Post Still Photo Showcase
I figured I would start a new thread in case someone wanted to show their still photography on the forum.

This is from an ongoing series I plan to do called "Puertas Rojas". I dunno why.. I'm not latin. But it just seems better than "Red doors".

This link in hopes that it will show up on google maps/earth.

A lot of my shots are not optimized for stills, but for timelapse video. On a shot like this, my f/stop was very low. For a still, I would have gone with more DOF to keep the stars sharp.

This is actually somewhat timelapse related too. This collage shows a bunch of eggs being shot with paintballs. It is NOT the same egg, I shot over 50 eggs during a month, so it is more of a timelapse/stop motion. I have a video of it, but I like this better, it sums it up nicely.

Very nice! How do you sync the cam with the shooting?

Matt, is this done with a Mumford Time Machine?

Post Re: Still Photo Showcase
I wish I had the Mumford Timemachine, but I'm too cheap for that- and my new equipment isn't compatible with it.

For these particular egg shots, I built a circuit that would trigger a flash to go off the instant a laser beam was broken. I pointed a laser pointer at a phototransistor, and when the paintball broke the beam it would set off the flash. All of this was done in complete darkness, so I just had to hold the camera's shutter open and fire the paintball-gun. The resulting flash was the only thing the camera could see.

I was on a deadline, and didn't have time to figure out why my delay circuit wasn't working, so in order to get pictures at different moments in the egg's death, I had to physically move the laser beam to a new spot so that the paintball/egg-guts would hit it at different times.

The exposures in those pictures were about 1/30,000 of a second, or 15 microseconds. I've improved on this stuff now, and can take exposures of 1/1,250,000 of a second, or 0.8 microseconds.

----
My next mission in the area of high-speed photography (if I ever get around to it!) is to get a bunch of people with DSLRs to help me out. I'll surround the subject with a bunch of cameras. Then I'll shoot the subject, and the image will be recorded on all the cameras from different angles. Then I can piece them together in Quicktime software so that your can click and drag on the image to rotate it and inspect it closely. Well, that's the plan at least.

Thanks! That means a lot coming from someone w/ such great work as yours!

That place is called "Rattlesnake Point" (well, it's about 400 yards from Rattlesnake point...), it's at the intersections of Christmas and Drum bays, along Follet's Island (north of Galveston island).

I was focusing a large project on photographing the GLO cabins (such as that one) out in the bays, and re-visiting them after storms to show the damage and such. Unfortunately, I hurt my back pretty bad last year, and didn't get to kayak at all for the whole year. Meaning, I also missed the great opportunity after Ike. Have a new trailer being built right now, so hopefully I'll be back on the water in a month or so.

This is a 119 image stack composited with Helicon Focus. It's shot at f2.8@5x magnification for the maximum possible stress test for depth of field stacking. I've worked out some simple programs to do the image stack + time lapse capture - however, the processing time for a single image stacked image is so ridiculous (this one took 3 hours I think?), i don't think I'm going to go there...yet.

That is so cool! I've tried an image stack of macro stuff before and it was ok/badish, but your thing is incredible! A timelapse of that would be awesome, if you can overcome the technical challenges. What are you using to get 5X magnification? The canon 65mm MP-E?

Yep yeps!...

The image stacking stuff I'm just learning. I wanted to do some really deep ones of like the arms of acropora corals, but the problem is, by the time you get that deep in the out-of-focus tip of the coral blurs out the whole image. I tried a 500 image stack - it did not come out so well :P

Most of my astrophotography is with astro CCDs nots DSLRs, this is one of the few I've done with a DSLR.
It's the Rho Ophiuchus & Antares region of the constellation Scorpio. Taken with a Canon 30D @ ISO 800
and a 70-200 L F/4 lens @ 70mm at F/4 unguided on a Takahashi NJP mount. It's a stack of 12 10 minute
exposures for a total of 120 minutes exposure time.

A link to a larger version is below the image on my website:

That is so cool! Astrophotography is something I really want to get into. Your site is really cool and interesting. I love all the shapes/textures in the nebula section, very impressive.

I used the free startrails software from Germany.
For some reason the English language option did not work, but it was easy enough to figure out.

We don't have a southern star here, but you can figure out where the south celestial pole is by looking for the spot below the southern cross, about 5 lengths of the main cross itself.

My attempt at Surrealism. This shot was very time consuming to setup, and I still didn't get it quite right (the little bubble on the sphere irks me).

-Tiny Acrylic Sphere
-Mirror in background at 45 degrees pointed out side of tank at LED sun.
-This shot took forever to setup because the sphere kept falling off and getting the "sun" in the right spot was touchy.

-The "sun" is actually on a post mounted to a sherline rotary table and wired into my linear stage/shutter system for time lapses.
