I have a $30 webcam that I wasn't using. I thought I'd try it out for some astrophotography as a change from what I've been doing - afocal shots of the moon and planets with a Nikon point and shoot.

I fashioned an adapter from a cardboard tube, attached it to the webcam, inserted it into my 2X Barlow, and then the entire assembly into the focusing tube. What I get on my laptop screen is a beautiful image of my secondary mirror. That's not what I expected.

I'd appreciate any help as to what's wrong with either my webcam or my setup. I'd like to buy the Logitech QuickCam 4000 with the adapter, but I want to be sure it will work as I expect.

Hi Gua ...if you can take a picture of your webcam set-up with your point and shoot.Try and include what your scope looks like in the frame, and post it here...maybe we can figure it out from that. There is a web site called Cloudy Nights, they have a forum and you can try and get help there if you like.

Try taking the lens out of the webcam and putting the ccd at the focal point. There are lots of articles on how to do this, if necessary.
