I can see your point about DF wanting to sell their own hardware but I think it would be a mistake not to continue to support the possible use of DIY contollers. For pure amateurs like me the cost of the software is well worth it, but then havin to add many times as much loot to access all the facilities it has would put me off.
The professionals will always buy the propper controller, nobody is going to waste precious commercial time experimenting with the soldering iron. The amateurs on the other hand may be put off buying the software for $300 if they also have to spend another $1800 (plus a new Canon camera if you happen to be using something else at present) to make full use of it.
Keep supporting the impoverished enthusiast, I say. You never know which teenager in a shed may end up owning a 30 stage production facility in Bristol with a full set of DF equipment on each.
