 Temperature of camera during timelapse
I will be doing some timelapses where the Canon 60D will be in the sun for multiple hours. The outside temperatures will be up to 90F (32C). Do I need to shield the camera from the sun? Will the camera overheat? I'm just thinking about black items in the hot sun over prolonged periods and the damage that may occur. Thanks.

Re: Temperature of camera during timelapse
Not sure of specifics of operating temperatures but don't think I'd leave my camera sitting in the direct sun for long. Check the camera manual, I'm sure that will tell you.

Re: Temperature of camera during timelapse
Canon, and most every other camera manufacturer, rate the cameras for 0-40C, which is a rather small range of temperatures. Realistically, it will handle much more severe range of temps, on both ends of the scale.
We have camera systems installed all over the world, literally from pole to pole, and upwards of a thousand of them in areas of high temperature, such as the Middle East, Arizona, Australian outback, etc. We have never seen high temperatures to be a problem. Granted, we do use a housing around the camera, and a solar panel is often mounted above as shade, but that's not always the case.
I wouldn't worry about it!

Re: Temperature of camera during timelapse
Because the camera is black I would cover it with some white fabric, like a towel or something.

Also, be careful about the lens. Some Canon and other brand lens have had issues about the focus barrel grease migrating to the lens diaphragms after exposure to heat. The type of heat experienced with the camera being left in a parked car during the summer. I haven't heard of this issue for the past few years.

Re: Temperature of camera during timelapse
I live in Africa and went out shooting in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa now a few times in the past few years. I shot a lot of shots that the camera is in the direct sun the entire day with extreme heat and temperatures avg. 116 F (47 C) and the temp in the direct sun is much more than 116 F. Where posible I will cover the camera with a black cloth or just have it sit in the sun on the MoCo for the entire day while shooting. Once the camera was so hot that I could not touch the camera as it was just to hot, this camera is now 2 ½ years old and still going STRONG.
