Post subject:  Taking/alignement the same photo after camera replacement

Is there any way to exactly align a camera to the same framing after is have been moved?

This is for a long term time lapse job, and when the camera fails, I need to replace it, and I want the same framing as before.

Any ideas?

thanks

If it's a Canon Camera, with Magic Lantern Firmware, the Ghost Image function could help.

Some example here :

Hi!

Thanks to both of you!

Magic lantern "ghost" function!.
Well, I really never used that ML "firmware/software" solution, but it seems the way to go.
Never heard of this function of ML until now.

A quick release plate attached to something solid.
Well I really can't understand how it could work.
I will always need to detach the camera from the release plate, and it would be very difficult to reframe the shoot again.

Ok, so we have the magic lantern for aligning the Canon cameras. Great.

Is there any other solution software/hardware for other brands, like sony/Nikon?.

Also for the long-term time lapsers, it seems that the sony mirror less cameras are the way to go, since they are proving huge picture count, at half the price the top canon/nikon cameras are providing.

The last A7R II comes with a warranty that they will shoot 500.000 shoots.

Any additional help regarding the camera alignment, I would appreciate.

thanks
lightime.

you dont say whether its on ground or concrete ? public access or private unless i missed a post perhaps
if soft ground and private property bang three star pickets into the ground the tripod legs could butt up against the star pickets that would be close millimeter precision i would think but might be a tripping hazard if you remove camera and tripod for any reason and dont put some rope or high vis tape around the star pickets. if concrete drill three small holes with a masonry bit they dont have to be deep unless you want to bolt the tripod down somehow. i think timetraveler was only thinking along the lines of minimizing the movement of the tripod using the quick release plate just to remove the camera for batteries, memory card or replacement. once you do whatever you need to do replace the camera gently onto tripod again. with ml ghost function you should be good to go in no time.
there is also chdk for canons which is Canon Hack Development Kit. i think its for some of canons point and shoot cameras while ml is more for dslrs i may be wrong feel free to correct me if i am someone. not sure what is out there for other brands

You can also fade the two clips together over a period of 1/2 or 1 second. The results are very good even for clips that are way out of alignment.
