Post Webcampak available for download on Sourceforge
Edited on 29th March 2011 to reflect latest changes
Hi,

As mentioned in a previous post, Webcampak software/source is now available for download on Sourceforge (https://sourceforge.net/projects/webcampak).

Installation of the software will provide you with an operational photography appliance. It has been created to be installed on a dedicated device (although you should be able to run it on your everyday latop running Ubuntu desktop).
By device it could be almost anything running Ubuntu (PC, laptop, PS3, nettop, embedded computer, ...).

License:
# Webcampak is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it
# under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by
# the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License,
# or (at your option) any later version.

# Webcampak is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY;
# without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
# See the GNU General Public License for more details (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/).

Prerequisites:
The follwing elements are necessary:
- A dedicated computer (or any compatible device) running GNU/Linux Ubuntu Server (Debian SID should work).
- One or more sources (DSLR Camera, Compact Camera, Webcam, IP Camera ...).
- An internet connection (useful for remote control but not mandatory).
- USB Webcam (for motion detection only)

Target Usages:
- Remote capture/monitoring (i.e. Building site),
- Capture pictures for deep Timelapse projects,
- Regurlarly send pictures to Internet (behave like a "webcam"),
- ...

Installation:
- Install Ubuntu Server with no extra packages (other than SSH Server)
- Download install.std.sh script from Sourceforge
- Execute the script from your user directory (do not run as root !): bash install.std.sh
- Indicate version (should be something like v0.9-rev20110111)
- Answer to all questions

Technical details:
- Webcampak core system developped in Python is launched by cron jobs (crontab). Webcampak core is used to coordinate actions between various open source software.
- The system can be used with multiple sources (i.e. cameras) running simultaneously.
- Viewer and administration panel are using Apache2, PHP5, MySQL, Smarty ...
- Main software involved: Gphoto2, ImageMagick, Mencoder, ffmpeg, motion, ...
- Some configuration details can be found on http://wiki.webcampak.com but work is still in progress there.

We will put files on Sourceforge SVN, so if you want to get involved it will be easier (although I don't know anything about SVN right now :)).

If you need any assistance to get this running please let us know here or on Sourceforge, it will be the occasion to tweak things up, address bugs, ...

All comments, feedbacks, reviews, bug reports, ... would be greatly appreciated :)

Updates:
Motion Detection (13/01/2011)
Performed using a USB webcam, when the webcam detect a movement it tells the system to take a shot.
Software used is "motion" (GNU/Linux).
Threshold is based upon pixels changes on data captured by the webcam.
Capture rate when something is actually moving can be configured.

Picture Manipulation (zoom/crop) (21/01/2011)
Ability to crop pictures to keep only some areas, may be useful to create a "virtual" zoom into some areas, especially with high end DSLR (large picture size).

Simple Weather Captures (20/02/2011)
Just added capability to record data from weather sensors (temperature and luminosity at the moment), save those details, generate daily graph and/or insert sensor measurements within the picture.

Simple Weather Captures (05/03/2011)
Electronic "Phidget" board remote control, ability to power up/down the camera remotely and automatically.

Features in the pipe:
- (progress 100%): Rewrite the whole software in Python with a properly structured code (no more bash shell scripting).
- (progress 100%): Add multi-lingual support into the core software.
Update: 27th-Mar-2011

I just noticed a dummy bug in the install script (trying to use a tool before actually installing it) :( so installation would fail.

I will update the install script tonight.

Hi,

We uploaded a new "beta" version on sourceforge yesterday evening.

Modifications includes:
- Webcampak core fully rewritten in Python
- International support: French and English, easy to add new translations (via gettext)
- Updated install script
- Phidget devices support (http://www.phidgets.com/): remote shut/unshut the camera, weather sensors,
- ...

The source/software is available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/webcampak/

We will now spend time double-checking that every options are working properly. The first "non-beta" version should be ready soon (probably in less than 2 weeks time).

If some of you would like to pre-test it please do so, and do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any difficulties.

Regards,

Hi

I am trying this out now.
I'm installing everything on a clean Ubuntu Server 32bit 11.04.

The install script fails.
Cant find package libavcodec-unstripped-52

Any solution to this?

Hi,

Install script has not been tested with 11.04 yet (released on the 28th of April 2011).

As this is a major revision (since 10.04 & 10.10), there might be packages variations.

After checking on launchpad it seems that the package has been deleted:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/amd6 ... tripped-52

You can try to remove this package from the script (look for apt-get install line) and execute the script again.

Once the system is installed you can try to install manually this package: libavcodec52

Just let me know how it goes.

When I'm trying to install libavcodec52:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
libavcodec-extra-52
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libavcodec52
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 to remove and 11 not upgraded.
Need to get 4,468 kB of archives.
After this operation, 28.7 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n

What should be installed?

That's fine you could press "Y" and try to continue with libavcodec52.

At the end if I remember properly tools within this package are only used to generate MP4 video web-previews. So you should be able to start playing with the system without it (it will not have an impact on regular captures).

Post Re: Webcampak available for download on Sourceforge
Hi,

There are multiple ways to solve this.

Easyiest one is to login into the system via ssh (non root).

move to webcampak/bin and type in python webcampak.py -t capture -s 1

This will manually start a capture on source 1, it there is an error with the subprocess you will see it displayed on screen.

It is likely to be related to the way the system detect your webcam, at this stage I don't think it is a bug :) (I played with Logitech webcams last weekend without issues).

Other tests you might want to run:
- Ensure "motion" is not activated (see Motion Detection) as it is also using the webcam
- Disable any processing that might create difficulties (such as disabling brightness adjustment).
- Copy/paste you config file here (Sources > Advances > View confi), be careful to remove any passwords.

Hi Guys,

First, Congratulations to the Webcampak developers! This is exactly the software what I was looking for. I'd like to set it up with 2 * canon ixus 400 cameras as a touristic appliance.

Today I did my first webcampak install, but it was not so successful :( Maybe some of you could help me to get it work ?

Here is a short description of the issue. I have to tell I'm not a linux expert, I have only a small practice but mostly with the Windows world.

The IP address is 192.168.1.101 for my machine named as "ubuntu-wcp"

I receive a 404 error message to "http://192.168.1.101/admin" and also for "http://192.168.1.101/viewer" addresses.
For simply typing in "http://192.168.1.101" I receive the "It works! ...." screen as it's installed by default with apache2.

Here is what I've done:

assembled a hardware: ABIT BD7II motherboard + P4/1.7, 512M RAM, CD drive, 200 GB HDD, ATI rage128pro VGA.
DL'd and installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32-bit, english environment, UK as location, EN-UK locale, no additional packages.
wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/webcamp ... all.std.sh
bash install.std.sh. Entered "v1.0-b25-20110528" as package name
installed mc and openssh-server.

I checked etc/apache2/sites-enabled and sites-available, but I can't see webcampak entries, only the default webpage.

What else do I have to check, and what else to do to make it work ?

Strange, did you lauch the script from your user directory (I.e not a subdirectory) ?

Could you copy the output of the install script to pastebin ?

just an idea: I could give you my screen + kbd + mouse via a teamviewer session (www.teamviewer.com), and then you can see what is going on the ubuntu box via the putty software...

Post Re: Webcampak available for download on Sourceforge
Just a quick update after a busy week.

v1.1 has been released last week on sourceforge, it includes new sensors support (up to 10 different sensors) and correction of some bugs.

Since the end of June a Webcampak is installed outdoor at "Festival des Vieilles Charrues", a famous french music festival, we live pictures sent every two minutes to their websites and one picture taken every minute for timelapse videos.

Hi,

Quick update:
There has been a few modifications since last July that some of you might be interested in:
- Improve the way weather sensors are handled in videos
- Improved processing of shots from IP Cameras (or other Webcampak)
- Implemented RRDTool for weather sensors
- Display latest shot or slideshow in full screen (i.e. to be displayed on a large HD TV)
- Specify intervals (i.e. from 8:00am to 5:00pm) for custom video)

And a few bugs :), more details in the README file.

As always, software is published under GPL on sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/webcampak/

If you have any comments/questions feel free to let me know.

Do you know of anything like this but for mac? I can't find anything. I need the option to start every day at a specific time and stop at a specific time every day.

Hi,

You could install Boot Camp on you mac, then run Ubuntu Server and Webcampak. Another option could be to use Virtual PC.

But Webcampak is not really interesting for short timelapses (hours, days, and if you intend to us it for a long lasting timelapse (weeks, months, years) you might find more interesting to use a dedicated small computer (netbook, nettop, ...).

I have a server that runs 24/7 and I cant use bootcamp because my mac needs to be running OSX. I thought about using VMware fusion with linux running in that, but I was not sure how well it would work like that. That is why I was trying to find a mac program. Have you tried it in VMware or something similar?

It should work with vmware. You can assign a physical USB port to a virtual machine, that shouldn't be a big issue.

Just a quick update about a recent release (1.3)

The biggest improvement is related to batch processing pictures in order to prepare shots for post-productions:
- Copy pictures between sources
- Add zoom/pan effect into pictures (by cropping pictures)
- Modify picture (resize, crop, add watermark, ...), add effect (i.e. tilt shift, ...)

This is more of an advanced functionality and becomes very useful when software is installed on a powerful server.

Again, Webcampak has not been created to replace powerful post production tools (i.e. Adobe, ...) but can be useful for all action prior to start using those post prod. software.

As always please do not hesitate to give us your feedback.

New dashboard has been added.

Interesting when the system is managing multiple sources/cameras as you can see some elements on one single page (disk usage, time since last capture, ...).
Image

Do you see any other elements that migh be interesting on the dashboard ?

As always, software can be downloaded from Sourceforge.

PS: Screenshot is in French but English translation is available

New release yesterday, with quite a large set of modifications mainly to clean code and ease configuration.

v1.5-b01-20120425:
New version, multiple modifications
- Sensors are now considered a source
- FTP servers are configured from a single page, ease things when multiple sources send pictures to same FTP server (enter the server only once)
- FTP section has been removed (replaced by FTP servers)
- code update and various other modifications

As always feel free to download and try it.

Post Re: Webcampak available for download on Sourceforge
New version has been released today (not tested yet with Ubuntu 12.04).

Over the pas two releases I tried to make configuration easier by removing some sections.

This release allow advanced tuning of capture slots (days / timeslot) on a per source basis. You can enable capture for some specific days of the week, and durring specific times during those days.

This was possible previously but needed multiple source (each source with a different slot), now this can be done using only one source.

v1.5-b02-20120504:
New: - Calendar to select days of the week and timeslots to capture
New: - Stats module, to collect details about running webcampak
Other modifications include:
- Removal of source planner, planning integrated within source configuration
- viewer/photos: corrected a bug when moving between months

Major update of Webcampak documentation. Converted from wiki-based to docbook.

Might still be a few typo/spelling/grammar mistakes :)

New version released

v1.6-b01-20120524:
New: - Set a minimum time between two pictures when generating a custom video or post-prod batch

Some of you might find it interesting, the idea is to keep only a few pictures out of a larger amount of captured pictures when generating a custom video or batch processing pictures.

If you capture at one picture every minute over a long period, you can use it to generate a video, keeping only one picture every 30mn (for example). You could also use it at variable rate, one picture every minute between date1 and date2, one picture every hour between date2 and date3, ...

New feature, that some might find interesting, as it open usage of Webcampak software from any camera and allow use of Webcampak in a "server" situations where pictures are taken using a simple intervalometer.

v1.6-b03-20120525:
New: Extract date from exif metadata for "ipcam" source (any files uploaded to /tmp/ directory get renamed like this YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.jpg)

From now Webcampak can extract date from EXIF metadata (if date has been properly set up on camera), which basically let you import into Webcampak, pictures taken by almost any kind of cameras.

To import shots within Webcampak:
1/ Choose the source (XX) you want to use and go into "Admin panel > Source XX > Capture"
2/ Configure "Type" as IP Camera (FTP)
3/ Into "Configuration of IP Camera" box, select "EXIF Metada" in "Define picture date based upon"
4/ Go into "Admin panel > Source XX > Photos" and remove any processing that might be configured (as you probably don't want to modify your pictures at this stage).
4/ Upload your pictures to /tmp/ folder of the source via FTP, or you can copy it manually to the proper directory (/home/username/webcampak/sources/sourceXX/tmp/
5/ Wait a few minutes (Processing will start based upon "Capture every" setting in the main configuration box of capture page).
- You can watch pictures being processed if you visit "Logs" page of the source

After a few minutes (or hours depending of the amount of pictures), all your pictures will be renamed and placed within a dedicated directory by day. You can then browse within pictures using the viewer panel.
File format will be : /pictures/YYYYMMDD/YYMMDDHHmmSS.jpg

Once all pictures have been imported, you can generate videos, batch edit all pictures (crop, resize, or any effect).

This is only compatible with .jpg files right now, and this feature should still be considered beta (but it should work fine).

Webcampak 2.0 has just been uploaded to sourceforge.

Just let me know if you encounter any issue, this version has only been tested on our hardware so there might be a few (probably minor) issues with different setup.

Changelog:
v2.0-b61 (experimental release)
- New web interface based upon Sencha Extjs Framework (Javascript / Ajax)
- Gather and display stats.
- Better permissions and user rights management.
- Audio & watermark moved to source + global level (instead of global only), this makes those files private.
- FTP Servers configuration moved to source level (instead of global level).
- ...

Hi All,

A new version of Webcampak has been uploaded to sourceforge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/webcam ... campak2.x/

Short changelog:
v2.0-b94
- Picture rotation
- Other minor improvements

v2.0-b93
- Easier way to configure internal sources processing
- Raw files support when used in conjunction with internal sources processing (get) and variable capture rate
- Few other U/I improvements

v2.0-b91
- Completely revamped Webcampak Mobile web interface

v2.0-b83
- Small improvement in the way configuration settings were loaded/saved for high latency links

v2.0-b82
- Display link to both AVI and MP4 in the videos window
- Various other improvements

v2.0-b70
- Added DSLR RAW pictures support
- Send stats by email daily
- Some web interfaces modifications (mobile and desktop)
- Critical bug corrections (compared to b61)

Feel free to play with it, and if you have any questions just let us know.
