 Re: D800 5K x 7K sensor
JR, good morinig sir.
FYI: for the fulldome community, 5-6K is seen as golden, because most high-resolution domes are 4K across. A 5-6K sensor gives the ability to crop out the 2-300 pixel edge distortion found in virtually all fisheye lenses and still have some room to down sample the frames (which always seems to increase apparent sharpness).
Up till now, the 8mm Fish would only give a 3600 pixel circle on a 5D (which would then require an upscale), but it should give a 4500-4600 circle on the D800.
So lets see if I have to go back to Nikon...

 Re: D800 5K x 7K sensor
Hey Jack, yea, fulldome is the industry term for video/content for domed theaters, and planetariums are a big big part of that community.
FYI: Literally every dome on the planet is a unique one-off, made mostly by one of 4 or 5 manufacturers, and so there are very few standards (which makes everything a horrible mess), but there are generally a few pixel density standards:
1K (1024) for cheap/old small single projector domes. 2K (2048) for midrange small single and double projector domes 3K (3000 to 3200) for cheap and midrange multiprojector domes 4K (4096) for mid-high end multiprojector domes and finally, 8K and 10K (only about 4 in operation on the planet)
then, there are stereo options for all of the above...
The vast majority of the museum quality domes in the world are 3K to 4K, so the content standard calls for 4K circular Targa frames... There are only 3 or 4 8K films so far.
