This is the new head for the lease-rig. It was designed to carry an Arri Alexa, but can carry any camera smaller than that as well. This would include basically all digital cinema cameras. It has an internal wiring channel so wires dont get tangled. It can be adjusted for compact size and low center of gravity as shown here, or the square extrusions can be exchanged for rectangular ones to raise the tilt/roll part up so the Alexa can be tilted all the way over the top without the back of the camera hitting the pan housing.

It has a two stage belt drive with tensioners for each stage. Much thanks to D1 for educating us that belt drive can have zero backlash in an economical package. Thanks also to Doug for pointing out that wider belts eliminate the sponginess experienced with 9mm HTD5M belts. The head uses 20mm belts with steel wire inside to prevent any stretch or sponginess. Thanks also to Gerald for all the advice in general, thanks Blue Gene and Biolapse for your help and encouragement along the way, and many thanks to all the Timescapes members who freely gave their hard earned knowledge here. I am very happy that this has been made possible because of all the information which has been shared here.

Here is the video of the CAD model.

For a limited time, anyone with a CNC mill willing to make some housings for me can have a free copy of the CAD drawings so they can make one for themselves. Several hundred hours went into the design, including a week with Jack McCaig of Draw-tech working with me at his house redesigning it for three axis milling and fixing some issues I had with assembling the model in Autodesk Inventor. This is several thousand dollars worth of engineering, and a really nice head in exchange for some parts because the bank came and took Fred's VMC away before this was ready to mill.

Looks good James, ever thought of complicating it with slip rings to eliminate cable twist completely.
Hope you are successful with the machining.

Thanks for the kind words.

Mike, what slip rings? I remember some round contactors for stuff that turns (like windmills) back in the 70's and 80's but thats where my experience ended. What I remember was taking them apart to clean or replace brushes which conducted electricity to the round traces on a circuit board thing. They probably have better ones now. Do you think they'd provide a clean video out signal path or a noise free USB connection? Or did you mean for it to just power the camera? This is a case where your experience might once again improve the design. Its just a drawing at this stage, so changes are easy to make. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Chris, thanks for the compliment. I hope DF gets your DMC 16 back to like-new function.

Anyone else with any suggestions for improvements please share them now while changes can be made with just a few mouse clicks
