The MX2 controller is a self-contained controller, it doesn't need a PC. The USB port is for downloading new firmware to the (Arduino) control board. "Moco" (=motion control) is open software (project) for the Arduino controller (the same as in MX2) for motion control for TL. Again, you can't use it as such from the PC. The reason that these controllers are self-contained is that most people don't want to take a laptop out in the field (battery use, environment etc)

In essence the dolly contains a motor and in order to make the motor do something you need a piece of electronics which is called the driver (something that supplies the right voltage/current) and, ideally, a control board, a piece of digital electronics that sends the right signals to the driver and listens from input. In theory you could send signals to the controller directly from your PC but most TL people prefer a one-box-does-all controller with a few buttons to controll motor, camera etc. Most people here use an Arduino controller (google Arduino) which you can control via the PC if you like. However, it's as easy to make a self-contained box that does it all so you don't need a seperate PC just to control the controller.

In theory it is not difficult to change the MX2 software (Arduino code) to control it via the PC instead pushbuttons. But it won't be fancy. I am not sure if a GUI client exists for the Arduino. It probably does.

Don't know of any other sw/controllers that does what you want.

Hope this helps.
