Post Dolly Drive System
So, I've acquired all the parts needed to build my own motion control system. I have the plans for the electronics all finished, but I've encountered a problem. The motor I have has an MXL size gear head on the top, maybe 20 teeth around. But finding a 12 foot MXL belt is not possible. Heck, finding someplace that will sell me an MXL belt of any size whatsoever, is hard.

I planned on putting the stepper motor on one end of the track, and having the belt loop around a freewheel on the opposite side. I could clamp my sled to the moving belt, and there you go! But without a belt, this doesn't work.

I've heard of other kinds of belts, what type of belt system could I use that isn't this miniature type? I'm looking to get this finished inside of this next week, because I do not have much time.

If getting a belt is not an option, what alternate systems could I use to drive my dolly? I'd like to keep the motor assembly off the dolly.

The collective knowledge of this forum is awesome.

I don't know if this is helping you; but this is what I am building right now.

I use a T10 belt: ... ulleys/383

This is not a closed loop, but very strong. The belt is 16mm wide and strengthened with steal wires. I have just tested my dolly yesterday with it and it worked great. My belt system is very similar to the one that DP is using. I use a worm gear ... ma-17.html to make it all work. Overall not cheap (to say the least), but you can drag a car with this thing :-).

I am planning a post about my dolly when its ready. That will take some time because I want to machine a few parts differently and I am testing different stepper drivers and voltages.
