Post subject:  Bogen tripod legs mounted to Milapse head?

Hello,

I have the Milapse Gen2 head and greatly dislike the tripod legs it ships with. I would like to modify my Bogen 3021N legs to mount the Milapse head. I saw that Andrew Curtis had built a mounting post but was wondering if there are any instructions on how to do this (tubing size, securing the bolt, etc.) I figured I would start a new thread on this. Thanks much.

Well, I'm a machinist so I made the post from scratch. If I remember correctly the post is .980 in diameter, made from solid aluminum. If you want one made I would suggest asking around at a high school or community college that has a machine shop. I know when I was in high school we did alot of odd jobs for people, often times for free.

The other solution is to find a course to fine 3/8 thread adapter (basically a small rod with one thread on top and the other on bottom)... If you investigate your tripod you'll probably notice that you can swap out the stud for a longer one... replace it with your converter and it should work?

There is a large bolt on the inside of the Milapse mount under the battery pack that you may be able to use in some way. It just so happens that this bolt fits perfectly into the bottom of the Milapse mount. I know that mine had been worked on a bit prior to being sold to me.

I don't know if Bill from Telescope Warehouse put that bolt in there after being in his possession but it seems to be akin to an appendix in its usefulness with its current placement on the inside of the mount. Can anybody back me up on this?

Any luck with this? I'm looking into getting a better tripod and will want to mount the Meade head to it as well. :)
Anyway we can pay you (Andrew) to make us a couple?!

Tell you what...let me hit the scrap yard next week and try to find some aluminum, and I'll see if I can make some up. How does $20 shipped sound? Would have to somehow verify that your tripod accepts the same diameter post as my 3001.

Awesome! While you're at it can I pay you to make me an L-Bracket?!?! (half joking, but hey take me up on it!)

I don't have a tripod yet, but it sounds like Bogen/Manfrotto is the way to go, no?

Thx!

Unfortunately I don't do sheet metal work. I'm not the one to ask about tripods, my bogen was given to me by a coworker who didn't have a use for it. I shoot my non-timelapse stuff with a cheapo $30 sunpak.

The two standard tripod head-mount screw sizes are 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 almost all major tripods use the second (in female form) to accept a head. If you'll notice the giotto's heads, they come with a mounting screw that "slips" a 3/8-16 over a 1/4-20, such that it'll mount on any tripod legs without needing to change anything.

Hey Guys -

Just got my Manfrotto 190 tripod. It has the 3/8" course thread. My key question is....how do I get the bolt out? It seems essentially hardwired in there....

Just curious! Also, the bolt on the tripod is way too short for the Meade mount - anybody else experience that?

Cheers! :)

Hey Guys -

So I got my Manfrotto 190 tripod used, and have been looking for a cheap head. I went to my local store and settled on the Manfrotto 3025 - sturdy and cheap. To my delight if you remove the rubber part on the surfuce you can just barely fit the screw from the Meade head through and mount the Meade directly onto the tripod head! It seems pretty stable too. Just an FYI... (photo attached)
