Post Firmware for the 497 controller
What is firmware version of the "older" 497 controller, the one that the Timeismotion software will work on/with? Is firmware version 43eg the old firmware? will the timeismotion work with a controller using that firmware?

Thanks!

you have to replace the firmware with the custom firmware to get the TIM to work...

milapse,
thanks for clearing that up for me! Damn, i really want to have the features in timeismotion, but the system i just purchased from telescope warehouse has the new version and i cant find any old version on ebay or anywhere. arrrg! hopefully there will be some additional development or workaround for this in the near future. thanks for all your info, videos, and everything!! I am just getting into this stuff and i have to admit its pretty confusing, so thanks again. Guess i'll just start out with the new 497 and wait for something to allow the ramping to come in the future. come on Meade!! get it together, help out the timelapse guys!! im sure they would sell a bunch more systems!

thanks!
joe

I was confused !!! you should be fine. you just need to load the custom firmware onto the 497. The TIM software requires custom firmware be loaded to work no matter what. What firmware is CURRENTLY loaded on the 497 has nothing to do with it!!

What I thought you were talking about was this: #497EG: http://tinyurl.com/y8nkz78

THE 497EG HANDBOX (nothing to do with firmware) WILL NOT ACCEPT THE CUSTOM FIRMWARE. this is because Meade has 'upgraded' the chip inside the handbox...

Milapse,
Thanks again for the help. Yeah im just a confused newbie. Its all a bit confusing. So basically i need to find the old version of the handbox to work with timeismotion. Is there any physical difference? how can i identify a handbox as being an older one so if i see one for sale anywhere i can snatch it up? Also, if i do fine an older one will it work with the package i just ordered from telescope warehouse (i got the "Milapse Mount,Tripod and 497 Deluxe Coronado Package"). Dont know if the version needs to be used with the new 497 and its new chip or not.

Thanks again!!

oh yeah, so what about the 495 controller? can we use that with the timeismotion software? you mention in your video that the 495 and 497 are basically the same thing

I can't confirm... I've never had feedback that it works or not.

It does work. Hardware is all the same. Once you've updated the 495 to 497 firmware you can forget that it was once a 495. ;-)

Yes, I bought a 495 handbox on eBay because they were cheaper than 497s, then made it into a 497 by updating the firmware. I think I updated to Meade 497 firmware (non-custom) in between just to be on the safe side and then installed the custom version, but I don't know if that's necessary. I can't remember if I have actually tested it with timeismotion or not, but I have been using it with another small program that also requires the custom firmware and communicates with the handbox just the same.

It's called My497Scope and can be found in the files section of the Meade_Autostar group on Yahoo (under scripting). It provides a simple interface for connecting to and communicating with the 497 handbox. Commands can be entered in the program or read from a text file. What Timeismotion adds is a nice interface for setting up a custom move and then automatically generating all the necessary commands.

Sweet, maybe i'll check it out. i got another question about time lapse in general. So the Timeismotion software from what i know does not allow shoot-move-shoot or whatever type motion and shooting but rather its continuous motion. I was just reading somewhere about a guy to says the shoot-move-shoot is not ideal and causes jerky motion. It seems to me though that the shoot-move-shoot method would be best. i really love the night time lapse shots and that really what i want to do. seems the shoot-move-shoot method would be best as i dont think i want the camera moving during a 20-30 sec exposure. what are your thoughts on this?

thanks so much you guys!

Post Re: Firmware for the 497 controller
Hi all,

I just received my MiLapse "Deluxe" from telescope-warehouse three weeks after ordering (held up at customs for a week) - so, with much excitement and glee I unpackage the box and then I discover that when I go to load the TiM software that Bill has sent me a handbox ver: 43Eg despite his assurances "you can use the optional 505 cable to run the mount by computer control with the freeware program from jay burlage"

I think someone needs to let Bill know that he's now selling kit which will NOT work with TiM - and honestly, I recommend making this fact much more clear on the TiM homepage - http://openmoco.org/node/25 as I was not even aware of this chipset change until after the order had been dispatched and I'd done a *lot* of research into the MiLapse method beforehand.

Right now I have a hunk of kit sitting here that I've waxed £230+ on and it's pretty much useless.

So my questions are:
1. Are there any plans to attempt to hack / engineer the ROM onto the new chipset?
2. Where can I buy an old chipset 497 (ebay returns no results for autostar 497)?
3. Has the 495 had simliar revisions made to it's chipset á la 497?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks! :)

I have taken the first paragraph (which did say it most likely would not work with the 497EG), and separated out the sentence that said it wouldn't work with the custom firmware as its own paragraph, left no doubt about it, and made it REAL BIG TEXT. Should be impossible to miss now.

I'll let Bill know...

The head works just fine without the TIM software. It's far from useless. Here's a little sample of what you can do without TIM:

1. development is dead (although all the source code is right there for anyone to pick up). At the end of the day the Meade system is closed source and although it was a fun adventure completed years ago, for me it's past it's prime.
2. I'd suggest you go to astronomy forums like cloudynights and ask if anyone would like to trade you for an older model.
3. I've been told the 495 will work.

I'm very sorry. I can't control the Meade corporation. I can only share my experience.
J

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your feedback guys - I bought a 495 from warehouseexpress.com (I'm UK based and there weren't any on Ebay) - the TiM software works great on it and I did my first test shot last night :D

Thanks milapse for all your great work on this project :-)

Post Re: Firmware for the 497 controller
Ok so I want to get a milapse setup with the 497 handbox. I have read that the new 497 controller does not work with time is motion. I have found one that has firmware 43E version. I have tried to google it and find out if this is the new version or the old one but couldn't find anything.

Could someone tell me where to look or if they know what version this is and if it would work with the time is motion software?

Thanks

I think it will be printed on the back of the controller? It's not the firmware that is incompatible it's the controller itself... The newer controller is the '497EG' (vs the older '497').

Ok so I asked the seller and he told me that it doesn't say on the back of the controller if it is the 497 or 497 EG.

Does anyone know if there is another way of telling what model the 497 controller is?

Thanks

Tui
