Post subject:  iPhone app for MiLapse

So i know a few people who know how to make iphone apps and was thinking it might be cool to create an iphone app for the milapse. Something similar to this http://www.dolnik.ca/@home/misc/pancalc/panning-calc.swf.

I thiink it would be great to have that little calculator with you in the field. I know you can calculate everything with a normal calculator, or in your head, but i think if we pack the app with enough useful features and data it would be awesome.

Any thoughts or ideas? If we think this is something that people would want and use i can try to get it made and on the app store and offered free. Let me know what you all think

The MiLapse App has been approved and is now on the App Store!!! Search for MiLapse (sucks but its case sensitive)!
or its here http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/milapse- ... 89267?mt=8
Thanks everyone!

MiLapse,
Can you post an image here to use as a logo and icon for the app?

How's this? Image

Although I don't have an Iphone. ;) Here's the calculations I'd love to see:

-obviously the ratio calculation. It would be good to get the accurate travel rather than a ballpark (100/150 are...)
-input for total time desired and degrees traveled desired
-input for seconds per frame and calculation for degrees per frame
-ability to coordinate start and track progress

I don't have an iPhone or a MILapse, but the thing missing from the (v. good) flash calculator is visualization.

1). User enters focal length of lens (and sensor crop factor) -> use this to calculate angle_of_view
2). You can then define the MILapse motion in terms of how long it takes to pan through an angle_of_view, which I think is the most natural way to visualize this panning stuff.
3). This may be a bit trickier, but having a full-sky image/cartoon on which you draw the start+end points, with field_of_view box overlaid, might be nice.
4). Ultimately, once the MILapse trajectory, field_of_view and intervalometry are known you can make a synthetic time-lapse; in the simplest case just pan across a cartoon landscape.

This is what my rather dated moco software does, although I can't take it into the field with me. You make a quick pano of the scene you want to pan across, give it a scale, draw the trajectory on that, and finally distribute your individual shots along trajectory (non-uniformly if you want ramped motion). Just from the viewpoint of armchair-timelapsing it really underlines the importance of slow panning.

You had to make it complex Tom!!

Yes I totally agree ultimately the idea of entering all parms, then for the head to intelligently gather/stitch a panorama image, then design a move based on a GUI is something I've been dreaming about for many years! :ugeek:

Since the iPhone is such a visual gadget I thought I'd go the whole hog. Don't you think that panning a still image behind a window would actually be quite simple on the iPhone? Visualization or not, an emphasis on 'natural variables' (e.g. time per field_of_view) would make the user's experience much more ... natural.

Now I think of it, isn't there an iPhone simulator that comes with the their SDK? MILapse, now you have no excuse to not simulate your dreams ...

For those who want to test this app i will need the "device id" of your iphone. You can get this by clicking on the serial number of your iphone within itunes. here is a video i found of how to get it

send me a private message with your device id and your name.

i need to add your device to the allowable devices this app can be tested on. apple really makes this a huge pain in the ass! what a process! anyways, once i have your device ID i will send you a zip file with the app and a provisioning certificate. to install just open itunes and drag BOTH the files into the apps folder in your itunes library and then sync your phone.

look forward to feedback! remember though, right now its just a simple calculator and i will be looking to add features that we see fit and i can program.

hey everyone, peppino has sent me the iphone beta deal for a milapse iphone app. He said its still under considerable tweaking and plans to add some things, and perhaps overhaul the look as well but its pretty cool thus far.

here are a few screen shots from my phone,

Post subject:  Re: iPhone app for MiLapse

So my first app seen above was basicall just a proof of concept. Im going to try to create the app using objective-c and xcode so that we can eventually get it on the app store for free download. I need to really lock in my feature set so i can design the application GUI and figure out the best way to structure everything. Below is my proposed list of features

AZ and ALT Ratio Calculation
User enters start degrees, end degrees, and desired pan duration. Calculator outputs:
- AZ and/or ALT ratio that should be set for the specified parameters
-
Final Output Movie Calculation
User inputs their timer interval, playback frame rate. Calculator uses the data from the AZ and ALT calculation and ouputs:
- Total number of shots that will be taken over the pan duration
- Movie clip length based on the playback frame rate that was input.

Memory Card Usage and Reminder
User will input the size of the memory card in the camera, and based on some of the data above will output:
- How long it will take to fill the memory card, and what time you should be near the camera read to change cards. This would be very helpful if you leave the scene of the shoot so you know when to come back and change cards if need be.
- If possible maybe we can set an alarm to go off on the phone reminding you to go check/change memory cards. If this can be done we can set up time frame to be notified, such as 10 min before, 5 min before, 1 min before.

I think thats good enough for the first version realease. I think the app will give us plenty of info to shoot with. We can add stuff in the future.

What do you guys think? Any things you guys think we really really need in this first version that we cant wait for?

You can do sidereals too. I've been doing well with the horizontal pans by using 15 degrees per 1 sidereal. I haven't had to figure out vertical as of yet.
Also was I too late for a beta testing spot?

not too late for beta testing, but i think its better to just wait until i finish the new version and then we'll test that one.

It looks great, but all the time fields are missing units, are they seconds, minutes, hours or days?

Post subject:  Re: iPhone app for MiLapse

I really like the look ad style you created for it. Simple but, sleek looking. I can't wait to check it out and get it in the field.
I know it's probably a bit much but, I think that for your memory calulations you might need to show the format, jpeg/raw1/raw2/raw/etc.
My friend was creating a spread sheet a while back with that info so, we could just plug in what we needed and shot with his 5D. If you need help maybe he'll be glad to share what he has so far.
But, maybe I'm the only one that would like to know this?

For those of you who PM'ed me their device ID for testing you can download the app from:
http://www.scientifantastic.com/iphone/milapse.zip

***This will ONLY install on the devices of the people who sent me their device id.***

To install:
drag BOTH files in the zip into the app folder in your itunes. the upper left column of itunes at the top is where the library is. Just drag it over the app folder. then just sync your phone.

Let me know if you have any problems installing.

well it seems every "breakthrough" idea ive had recently is currently being discussed on this forum.from arduino controlled moco to hdr timelapse. who will be first to do it in 3d? lol, what a great resource.

i was brainstorming a script/spreadsheet just like this app.

great idea, and id be willing to pay for it.

betatest would be smooth too :)

good luck and keep us posted !

New App for Download

Hey Guys,
So the new version built using XCode is available. I only have the initial screen for az and alt ratios done, but the other screens will be done soon. there is only one bug in the app at the moment and it happens when you manually input the hours and minutes for the duration. if you hit the backspace key the app closes. just wanted to get this out to everyone to play around with.

For those of you who have sent their device ids to me you can download the app below:
http://www.scientifantastic.com/iphone/Milapse.app.zip

Installation is same as before.

Post subject:  Re: iPhone app for MiLapse

Hi

I can't wait for the app to be ready, is there any chance for a beta copy on short notice?

I dont know much about writing apps for the iphone, but would it be possible (for a future update) (I know this is a big ask)to build a bulb ramping script using say, an audio interface (iphone head phone jack) and say DTMF tones which are cheap and easy to convert to electrical signals and can offer 16+ channels. DTMF decoders are easy to find (in all telephones) and wire into a shutter release cable and the iphone should be able to calculate the time intervals over a given period (maybe even using internet based beginning and end of daylight data) and output a audio signal.

Using DTMF tones might also work for controlling more complex Moco systems with the ability to send 16 commands simultaneously with infinite duration.

Im interested in the iphone milapse developments because it is such a small but powerful device and carrying a computer is out of the question in the remote location where I like to shoot!

I suppose the big question is, will Apple allow an App to control another device?
