I've been looking for telescope mounts for months and the other day I finally found a Meade DS2000AT-TC with Autostar 497 where I live. I was wondering, will that model work as a timelapse head? I also need to know if the mount can be used with the MX2 from Dynamic Perception.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It'll work as a timelapse head. You'll probably need to make your own bracket to mount the camera to it though, so it involves a little DIY work. Then you can either use it the simple way, clamping buttons down, or you can do advanced control with scripts from a laptop via the 497.

Having to use a laptop for advanced control is cumbersome, of course, and unfortunately the bad news is that it cannot be controlled with the MX2. For that you would need a Merlin head.

Thanks for the reply. I think it will be better to keep looking then.

Any specific Merlin model to recommend me?

When we talk of "Merlin" it actually refers to one specific mount - which is sold under multiple names. I believe the cheapest way to get it is to buy it in a package with a small telescope:
http://www.celestron.com/c3/product.php ... ProdID=668
(That link isn't necessarily the cheapest, but now you know what model to look for. I see they have a couple on eBay...)
According to this thread a replacement for the Merlin mount is on its way and the Merlin mount is actually discontinued, so you may want to try to get your hands on one ASAP. No word yet whether it will be possible to make the replacement work with the MX2.

BTW, in that package the mount comes with a nice L-bracket that you can mount the camera on (the optical tube mounts to the bracket just like a camera would).

I see. Thanks for the info.

I tried that link but it returns "invalid product" and takes me to the homepage.

The problem for me is to get one of those here in Argentina. If I buy it online, I will be paying like 3 times more, it's crazy.

Odd, the link works fine on this end. I wouldn't have any clue about getting it locally in Argentina, but here it is on eBay from a vendor that supposedly ships worldwide:

If that link for some reason doesn't work either, search for "Skywatcher Backpacker" (US) or "Acuter Merlin" (Europe) to find the model.

I know it says worldwide shipping, but under "shipping and payments" tab the only country is USA.

Anyway, now that I have the info I know what to look for. Thanks again!

You could message the seller for a shipping quote. Most likely it's just not possible to display worldwide shipping costs and potential buyers from outside US are expected to inquire for a quote.

Yeah, I sent them an email. I'm waiting for a response.

Thank you, you've been very helpful!
