Post Adjustable Ladder / Rail / Beam Dolly
This is the other dolly I just made that I referred to in this thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=3000

This dolly will run on the same rail, or just about any other square rail. The meade telescope head can be added on any rail wider than about 7"

I was influenced somewhat by this one by xlntpix, which is a lot nicer looking

But I wanted even more flexibility, as well as avoiding belt drives for use in extreme cold.

Direct drive from motor to rubber drive wheel

Wheels and top plate are from a couple of skateboards

Will go right down to about 4" for rail width with just the camera mounted and no tracking head

With right angle adapter added, it can clamp around beams and rails etc

Simply awesome Antz! I love that you're pushing the envelope on these self propelled rigs. Really looking forward to some results!

Thanks Jay.
I have a few other ideas percolating in the back of my brain, these were just the first couple I threw together during periods of rendering.
Once they re-open the local bridge after the earthquake repairs, I want to try this one out on the railing to see how it goes over about a 50 meter run. Would also work well on overhead beams in industrial buildings I think.

interesting. have you had any issues with the drive wheel slipping or being inconsistent at all?

edit to add:

just noticed your using gitzo's for support. you got some sexy 'spensive legs there ma'am

No problems with bench trials etc so far, I'm just waiting for a day with a little less wind to try it out on a local bridge where I can get a run of about 30m / 100ft.
It probably couldn't handle too much of an incline, but relatively level surfaces have been OK.

I actually prefer the Manfroto heads I have to the Gitso, they behave a little better in the cold, and the camera quick connect plates are a lot easier to handle, hence the Gitso head being here rather than on one of my tripods.
