D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
I cannot figure out what is causing these jumps in the frames. I'm headed back to lake Powell next week and don't want to come back with junk. http://youtu.be/zbPs8YsQvqgAt first I thought the DP dolly was getting bumped (which is wasn't) but the dolly part is smooth. It's something that seems to be happening in camera, and might be something with the mirror? It only seems to happens on vertically oriented dolly moves, and it doesn't seem to happen when shot on a tripod with an intervelometer. Please help.

I'm going to bet that you left the IS on. Lens stabilization should be turned off when you are on a tripod or dolly.

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
Yeah if your VR is on it will certainly cause this. make sure AF is off too.
EDIT: i just watched the video. Was there any wind?
and elaborate more on this only happening during vertical dolly moves? How much testing have you done to verify this?
Can you share your camera settings?

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
Interesting! Had no idea about that. I know that's a setting on my 18-105, but not sure that my 11-16 has that option. Is it the VR setting on the lens, or is there an internal camera setting?
Also, would this be fixable in AE using warp stabilizer?
Thanks!

Thanks! No the 11-16 does not have VR, so if this was done with that lens, VR is not the issue. how do you have your camera configured? what shooting modes and features do you use? possible issue with wind? the movement looks to be straight up and down, i would think if it were the dolly the movement would ve orientated in the same direction of the movement. What was the focal length? that would be quite a bit of camera movement for that much movement to be visable with such a wide lens

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
I wouldn't think that a 11-16 would have VR - if that is the case I'm going to guess it is the AF or something else Automatic left on. Might be able to fix in AE as long as the film plane remains the same - else you'll get weird shifts that will look like jello.

I'll look the lens & settings up when I get home and post them. The dolly move goes up to the left at about a 30 degree angle. Would this still be considered on the same plane?

I looked at it again and It probably is on the same plane (I really meant jumps in the film plane from picture to picture) like you would see if the autofocus or if VR was left on, it really didn't look like that was the case - it maybe a good candidate for AE stabilization. give it a try.

Woh, that's crazy... I've never seen anything like that! Are you sure you didn't like apply some sort of cropping accidentally to some of the frames? I'm definitely racking my brain on how this could happen with a non-VR lens..

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
I re-tested it, and it was 100% the VR. Who knew the havoc that one little switch could wreak?
I'm trying Warp Stabilizer in AE... at least it won't be a problem again. !! It tooled 5 of my coolest dolly moves from this past trip to Powell... hope they can be salvaged. :-/

just realized you used a dolly..run your dolly with a glass of water on it to see how smooth it is...

NIKON-SONY-NUT wrote: just realized you used a dolly..run your dolly with a glass of water on it to see how smooth it is... Actually, it's incredibly smooth. There is only the slightest movement after each dolly move, and allowing more than 1 second between intervals (my camera's buffer only allows a shot every 2 seconds anyway) finds it perfectly still for the exposure. All the dolly moves I've done (with the exception of the ones I messed up with the VR switch) have been perfectly smooth when edited.

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
Now this totally makes sense, each time the dolly moves in a move shoot situation it would activate the VR system causing the optics to shift and settle in a different position. It's interesting that it's pretty consistent between two vertical positions but you'll have to ask the lens engineers why that would be..

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
I could not figure whether you decided it is a VR problem or not, but it seems to me it could be a software problem... Did you check your frames to see if they are all vertically framed the same way, or did you just check the final result video?

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
It was the VR that caused the frames to jump.

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
Hi Joel, how did the Warp stabilizer turn out on the footage? I'm interested to know wether you can save such jumpy footage, as I have a very long day to night TL on a bridge that moves ever so slightly up and down due to heavy trucks passing and the bridge vibrating.

Re: D7000 frame jumps in some shots??!
It looked to me like warp stabilizer completely fixed it/made it smooth again. Amazing feature to save shots like this. !!

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I'll have to look into this warp stabilizer then
