Post subject:  Licensing to big Hollywood production

HI

I was approached by a huge hollywood production company to use of my timelapse sequences for an upcoming cinema movie.

It is a 5 second sequences (5K)

I acutally just read the email request and I have no clue what to charge or how to approach the whole thing contract wise.

Can somebody recommend a page with info or even suggestions in regards of an appropriate license?

Many thanks for any input

Chris

Depends a lot on the clip, how unique it is, whether they want it exclusively, and what their budget is. There can be a huge range.
Average is around about $50/second for most generic non-exclusive world-wide licenses.

Hi Anthony

they want exclusive and the footage is very unique, not re-shoot-able because the location has changed since then - only option would be a very expensive animation. I guess this is a good selling point from my perspective. Considering these parameters, where to go from 50 per second for non-exclusive, generic TL?

I forgot to say: this is such a "mega"-production. I do believe the budget is in the thousands.

Personally, I have never given exclusive rights, as it removes all future sales from you. So you need to consider how much you could make if you sold the same clip multiple times. For something really special it would not be unreasonable to ask for $100/second or more non-exclusive. If it is something you could sell another 10 times at that price, that should be your exclusive price. You could also ask for a limited exclusive window of say 2 years so you can use it later on again. As I said, a very wide price range. At least this should give you should have a general ballpark to start from.

If you look at those stock sites, anything for film production is $5K and up...

$50/sec? Dude, I sell SD Video clips at $50/sec web platform only. Selling 1080P HD at $75/sec web platform only so a 5k piece for Cinematic release would be way beyond that. If that was mine I'd be looking to get at least US$1500/sec and especially so if they are looking for exclusivity.
