A new open-source 4-axis stepper driver coming soon =)

* Complete Control of 4 Stepper Motors @ 1.6A-2A/coil:
** Microstep Setting (full to 16x)
** Enable/Disable individual drivers
** Step
** Direction
* Individual control over current limits
* E-Stop input
** Kills all drivers
** Can be read by arduino
* 7 Auxiliary inputs
** Extends arduino inputs with no extra pins used!


Connection to Arduino/uC via RJ-45 cable
* 4x pins = SPI (CLK, MISO, MOSI, LATCH)
* 2x pins = GND
* 1x pins = E-stop input (can read state or set e-stop via software)
* 1x pins = 5V/250mA -- run the arduino off of the logic power on the board (only need one cable/battery for both)

Motor Connections:
* 4X MIDI female plugs (DIN5 180')

* 1x 2.5mm stereo jack for e-stop
* 1x DC barrel jack for power input
* Power switch
* 5x LEDs (4x driver enabled, 1x power)
* Ready-made enclosure (no pics yet)

Possible additions before final release:
* Daisy-chaining (chain up to 64 boards for 256 motors from 4 arduino pins)
* Additional GPIO pins
* Alternative connection pads

Microstepping ... you got my attention ... a possible 3,200 steps per rev with a 1.8 degree motor - now that's a good start.

(Some of the high end moco boards offer up to 12,800 steps for specialist applications but 3,200 is an ideal set.)

Any idea of the cost?

Thats terrific! been looking around for something to drive Steppers...in microstep, the old K179 board I have is a bit jumpy.

Another thing what voltage is given to the stepper motors to operate? Also I use 6 wire steppers, does this mean with the plugs you have I would have to tie the two power wires together?

The only thing needed is some sort of thermal management for the ICs. If you don't kill the motors all the time those little chips get really hot! The board looks pretty cool though, I want one. Any idea on cost?

@Astroman, this will work for bipolar motors in a parallel configuration, so you'll need to wire that 6-wire motor in a bi-polar parallel configuration, meaning two of the wires will not be used.

@RC you're ok under 1.2A, with motors designed to run within the current limits it supports (I believe the minimum current limit is 150mA, but I'll have t double-check), at approaching 2A it will be up to the user to supply fans, considering you'll be dissipating around 96W of heat for 4 motors =)

Regarding voltage, it's designed to run from 9V-16V, with 12V being the target voltage (it is a chopping driver, so recommend badge ratings <= 6V to best take advantage of its capabilities).

We're hoping to hit a street price of $150 or less, and get them on the streets (i.e. full production) by Thanksgiving or Christmas =)

just wired up my first robot using the easydriver and really like how easy it is to use but am looking to control 2 axis at least and use some more powerful steppers... this board looks perfect, am i missing something here?
