Post subject:  Noise reduction on or off?

I tried poking around to find this answer but didn't see anything.

I have an older Canon 20D body and when I shoot long exposures in the dark it takes forever to process the image. I have noticed some of you talking about 30 second exposures with a 1 second interval. This would not be possible with the delay im getting. So my questions is do you turn off the noise reduction in your camera when shooting? Or is this just something I have to live with on an older body?

You're probably best served to turn the NR off and put a little ching into post process noise reduction... Neat video is pretty, well neat! There's lot's of other options aswell

I'm quite sure most are turning it off, shooting RAW and working as much in post as possible. You get faster frame rates and better results in the end.

Thanks for the info! I suspected that was probably the case.

So that leads to the next question; how do I remove noise in post?

I have Adobe master collection CS4. So hopefully it can be accomplished with something I already own.

ACR (adobe camera raw) has noise reduction. When you import your RAW sequence into AE you'll get the ACR tool automatically. There you can set the noise reduction to taste.

Holy smokes Batman! I was worried I was going to have to jump through hoops to get the noise reduction to work outside the camera. I'm new to RAW files so I really need to dive into the ACR tool set.

Again thanks for your help!

Time to get shooting and experimenting!

Just thought I'd post a follow up for others benefit. I took this the other day with NR off in camera. I was able to use Adobe camera raw to adjust NR and sharpening to get this result which I thinks is pretty good.
