The original Matrix bullet time shot is straight forward. Shooting with lots of cameras simultaneously arranged round the subject and then sequencing the stills into a video. Check out http://www.breezesys.com/MultiCamera/index.htm :-)

There is a guy ( based in Sydney) who had a setup as above in a hotel pool for I think a drinks commercial ! Just think what you could do :)

You sure that in the first video actors were not just standing still? That's a technique that has become very popular these days and there are quite a few really good examples on if it on your tube.

I searched for the making of but no luck, it would be good to watch.

If you're only going down to 1080p, you don't need 16MP+ latest and greatest DSLRs. You could do it (relatively) inexpensively with some 5 or 6 year old DSLR technology.

Yes you are correct. I wonder how many you can get way with. Would ten do the trick? I'll research better when I get the time anyway.

If shooting video at 25fps then you could get away with minimum of 13 cameras and blend frames to get a 1sec clip.

For commercial shoots they would use 60+ to get a 2 sec NTSC clip :)

You're not wrong at all. Camera's fast and shaky movement is the key to hiding it all. It hides actor's movement.
I can't seem to find the examples I had in mind. I think 50 Cent had a video like that too, but not 100% on that though.

Yes, that WAS cool. The idea of using skilled actors/models to to hold still is not new but they've taken it to new heights. Motion control makes it all possible.

Back to the OP, I got the impression form the toothpaste add that a series of short timeslice sets had been composited on top of each other; the array is set up to mimic a handheld walk-through camera and each shot is timed to come onto the screen and to leave the screen on cues. Everything is shot on greenscreen. Difficult but not inconceivably so.

Probably a mix of many techniques including full c/g.

I worked on a small project with very similar looking shots as the party and we used or should I say built platforms and supports for our actors to help hold them in place during the shoot and also found some transitions spots that we worked in post. I see this project goes through doorways and that would be a very good place to break and build a different room setup and enter the door again and wipe it in post.
Very nice spot. The wine would be pretty easy to add in post.
Ill try to find the project I worked on and post it here.

The camera move at 0:07 is very confusing. No room for the camera man to fit through those two people. Very good post work.

Ahhh. I have been working on this concept for quite some time, in the basic testing that I have done using multiple cameras I have made the obvious conclusion that to get a quality end product more cameras the better! If this is worth doing it's worth doing properly, ie, 24 cameras per second of required footage.

I have been playing with a few basic jpeg camera modules such as a 5mp moduel as found in the iphone4 worth under $30 each to slightly more complex consumer digital cameras hacks.

My main requirement is to be able to control all the modules at once and to be able to download a buffered image from each camera right away.

Using the small 5 to 8mp modules makes it possible to mount the lenses right next to each other with about 2cm between the center of each lens, this will make for the smoothest motion and the most flexibility. With focus down to 2 or 3cm it would make for great macro shots of water etc. And as far as I can see, no one has yet built a rig that hasn't required extensive post processing to smooth and add frames.



If anyone is interested in taking this idea any further let me know, when I find the right jpeg module, some clever programing will be required to control them, and this is where I fail!

I did a quick and dirty test on the weekend. Just one camera, lots of photos and some frame blending. I think with a bit more planning and post time I could get a pretty good result.
