Post Kingdom of Plants 3D and Galapagos
Just browsing around the forums researching intervalometer ideas and thought I'd share this under 3D. I've been lucky enough to work two 3D series shooting timelapes; Kingdom of Plants and latterly Galapagos. Both were 3D projects and had a lot of timelapses in them.

Over the past two years we've been developing the technical side if things with the rigs and motion control. Chris & Jay at Dynamic Perception, and Brian at eMotimo have been incredible with their support.

Here are the links to the projects. Both are UK projects but been broadcast around the world so hopefully you'll catch them somewhere.

Hope you like them!

Awesome, thanks for sharing Robert. Hoping to get a chance to see Galapagos soon.

Out of interest, how did you manage to align your cameras when arranged side-by-side? Was it a custom made rig or a simple stereo bar? and were you able to use a 3D monitor to check alignment and stereo depth in the field or was there some guesswork involved? I've had problems getting them close enough together and far enough off the ground to keep my foreground at a safe distance and stay in budget. I realise a mirror rig, although pretty unwieldy for timelapse, solves these issues, but was just wondering about the side-by-side setup you use.

Thanks!
Jimmy

Hi Jimmy.

Thanks!

I used a mirror rig a lot and built custom motion rigs for pan, tilt and dolly for 3 axis moves with it.

Side by side rigs was a custom bar too for mounting cameras next to each other, and then for bigger IO I had the cameras 20-50m apart. I used a stereo monitor at all times to align the cameras, apart from when they're 20+m apart. Budget is a problem so I use location where my FG is a very l long distance away.

Hoping to write a section of my website about the rigs and kit when I get a chance.

Hope that helps
Rob

Thanks Rob,
I'll keep an eye on your website for more information, and will definitely investigate using mirror rigs more.

Cheers,
Jimmy
