I'm looking for help.

I loved timescapes, it opened my eyes to a new realm of possibility. I watched Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka and others when younger and enjoyed them a lot, but the quality and technical brilliance of Timescapes got me thinking and thinking.

I now have a unique opportunity, with a very short timeframe, to propose the development a feature like Timescapes, but in a (very safe) sub-Saharan African country.

I'm a proffesional photographer, stills, and I realize my dreams, and well as my limits.

What I am looking for is the person who could/would be willing to spend a year or two (guesstimate of time needed on location) on the project. In the short term I would be looking for ball park figures for the project as I have a deadline of less than a week to budget this into a larger project.

What would the person cost me? What equipment would they need?

It's a bit of a wish list, and a hell of a short deadline, but I am interested to hear from interested parties.

What I would like from you initially is a link to a portfolio and some details of your experience on such projects.

Tom, if you want to come spend a few years making timescapes 2 in Africa then you can skip the portfolio and details of experience ;-)

Thanks for hearing me out guys.

Dan

Can you post some more details? What sub-Saharan country is considered very safe? Who is paying for this? What larger project is this being piggybacked onto? Are we traveling with a larger group with some other job to do, or are we on our own? How many of us do you plan on bringing? What type of vehicles will we have and how many? Will we be in tents and the vehicles the whole time or are there other accommodations? Are there other resources associated with our group or the possible other project we're travelling with including but not limited to tools, vehicle parts, bush mechanics, machine shop equipment, food, shelter, extra bodies to help with heavy lifting, etc.

Is there some theme to the movie or are we shooting anything that looks cool and hoping for clarity at edit time? Nothing wrong with that, just asking. What kind of hardware do you want the photographers to bring? Is there someplace in country where we can buy 80/20 extrusions for dolly track or someplace where we can have such large pieces shipped to ahead of time or are we planning on sticking with smaller, lighter stuff? How much weight/space can be allocated for gear and tools? Is there a shipping container going at least to the destination country or continent, is there extra space for heavy gear in it, when and where does it get packed? Are we bringing any vehicles (which can be packed prior to shipping) or using ones which are there already?

I'm up for it, but I think you might get more responses if there are more details.

Thanks for all the questions, exactly what was needed. Please see responses below.

Can you post some more details?
Yep

What sub-Saharan country is considered very safe?
Will inbox you the destination, but it is safe.

Who is paying for this?
Will inbox as confidential

What larger project is this being piggybacked onto?
Will inbox as confidential

Are we traveling with a larger group with some other job to do, or are we on our own?
Independent movement. Other groups will be traveling shooting stills and video so can overlap or not. All down to the planing and priorities of the separate groups

How many of us do you plan on bringing?
Initial thought is one international to work with one or two locals one is a photographer who has some timelapse experience, the other is the needed local liaison and logistics guy.

What type of vehicles will we have and how many?
Initial idea is something like a unimog camper conversion. Self contained sleeping/bathroom/kitchen etc lots of storage, go anywhere capability and can be self sufficient for weeks at a time in the bush.

Will we be in tents and the vehicles the whole time or are there other accommodations?
Envisage working on location assignments with back at base in between with regular accom and facilities

Are there other resources associated with our group or the possible other project we're travelling with including but not limited to tools, vehicle parts, bush mechanics, machine shop equipment, food, shelter, extra bodies to help with heavy lifting, etc.
All of that and more available, how much you travel with the other teams is down to logistics and priorities

Is there some theme to the movie or are we shooting anything that looks cool and hoping for clarity at edit time? Nothing wrong with that, just asking.
The theme would be to showcase the country in question. Interpretation of the theme is down the the team in question. Lots of freedom to shoot cool stuff and be creative. Cool stuff will make the place look good :-)

What kind of hardware do you want the photographers to bring?
One area I need assistance with is budgeting the required equipment. At the moment I'm not sure how much is needed. The project would buy all needed items. I don't need a list so much as a general idea how much (in usd) is needed for kit, for people, for anything else.

Is there someplace in country where we can buy 80/20 extrusions for dolly track or someplace where we can have such large pieces shipped to ahead of time or are we planning on sticking with smaller, lighter stuff?
You are probably limited to what you can move in the Unimog, which is quite a lot. No issue with shipping in items, but in country purchase of specialist gear impossible. It's all gonna be imports unless we can have it made locally.

How much weight/space can be allocated for gear and tools? Is there a shipping container going at least to the destination country or continent, is there extra space for heavy gear in it, when and where does it get packed?
Lots of stuff to import for greater project, so shipping not an issue. Timeframes are flexible and have to be due to the nature of the location and getting stuff here. Shipping prob from US east coast.

Are we bringing any vehicles (which can be packed prior to shipping) or using ones which are there already?
Purchasing for project. Idea is 4x4 trucks with camper conversion I.e. unimogs.

I'm up for it, but I think you might get more responses if there are more details.
For sure, and thanks for helping me articulate the requirements better!

(And sorry all written on iPhone in a moving car!)

I'm guessing you've already solved this problem. I'd be interested in learning more specifics as well.

I spent a month shooting in Africa [Kenya] last year. I was in charge of shooting video and aerial photography so unfortunately there isn't any timelapse in this video. We took 15 cases of equipment in five vans.
