Peter Jackson hoping to turn "The Hobbit" into a trilogy
Story: http://www.firstshowing.net/2012/peter- ... bit-movie/Peter Jackson now is attempting to turn The Hobbit into a "trilogy". Ugh. In my opinion, Jackson has an issue with discipline. The original "King Kong" in 1933 was 100 minutes long. Peter Jackson's 2005 remake was nearly double that length, at 187 minutes. And Jackson's Extended Edition King Kong was 201 minutes! Where is the storytelling discipline? Was Jackson's version twice as good as the legendary 1933 masterpiece, and therefore needed to be twice as long? The Hobbit is only 300 pages. It is basically the most perfect book ever written to be turned into a single film. It has a perfect story arc. The Lord of the Rings is about 1,100 pages, so it makes sense to do as a trilogy. But if you cannot make a 300 page fantasy story into a single movie, I think there is something wrong.

well it may not be a trilogy but it will be at least two movies, I found this out the other day reading an article and they mentioned the first movie would be out this winter, and I thought wait, "first movie"? and then of course there will be extended blu-ray versions. yikes

Re: Peter Jackson hoping to turn "The Hobbit" into a trilogy
i remember hearing the quality was almost 'too' good and that it didnt suit the film much at all, gave it a weird look that even seemed to make the acting look bad?!
as for multiple films i agree one would be better, the hobbit was the only tolkien ive ever finished (kept stopping at tom bombadils house in lotr!) and really enjoyed it so hope the film is sufficiently epic!

You have to remember that while it is being called The Hobbit, it is not just that book being filmed, it is also a ton of other material that Tolkien wrote. Yes, his King Kong theatrical run was definitely about 30 minutes too long, but if you look at the LOTR extended editions, personally I think they are far superior to the theatrical versions.

I can see turning it into 2 movies due to the fact that he's delving into the appendices, etc. But 3? I agree with you Tom.

Re: Peter Jackson hoping to turn "The Hobbit" into a trilogy
Yes, I think a case could be made for making this 2 movies including the appendices, but just for the Hobbit by itself, I feel strongly that this should have been one film. It's a 300-page book. Jackson has shown time and again a lack of discipline in run times, IMO.

I don't mind as long as it keeps people working out at Miramar, it means more jobs for me!
