To initially assess a batch of stills before further processing them, I like to quickly scan through them. On Windows I used Picasa Photo Viewer, which is very fast -- about 30 jpg images per sec, each 5MB. It greatly drops the resolution to achieve that speed but I can roughly evaluate the time lapse.
Picasa Photo Viewer is not available on OS X, and I have evaluated many other utilities but none are as fast. What does everyone else use for this?
Below are what I've examined on OS X. All done on a top-spec 2013 iMac with files on a Thunderbolt 8TB Pegasus R4 RAID5 array. Each image is an approx 4MB .jpg from a Canon 5D Mark III.
XEE3: screen does not update when quickly browsing
ViewPic for Mac: screen does not update when quickly browsing
FastRawViewer: screen does not update when quickly browsing
OS X Preview: screen does not update when quickly browsing
XnViewMP: 6 per sec
OS X Quick Look: 7.6 per sec, but it skips groups of photos
Picasa (not Photo Viewer): 11 per sec; slight resolution loss but not bad
PerfectBrowse 9: 11 per sec, but resolution drops severely and unpredictably
Photo Mechanic 5: 12.5 per sec; generally good resolution. Adjusting cache settings helped.
ACDSee Pro: 14 per sec, but screen intermittently loses sync

You could try Quicktime 7 Pro -> Open Image Sequence..
Quicktime 7 also has the option of enforcing it to play all frames,
this may result in jagged playback, but at least you will see every frame.
This can also be done with Quicktime 7 (non-Pro)
By first opening the last image and then dragging the rest on the images on top of the open movie,
be sure to select them in the correct order, they will be added before the already opened frame.
Note that these methods do not save the data to a new file, so should be quite fast.
