Post ASTRAL: Strange brightness increase while in M mode
Can't figure this out...

Here is the example:

PASSWORD:time

I shot in manual mode F2.8 EXP:30s
Edited in LR and exported in AE. Tried exporting twice and re-editing. Same results.

The problem is when a car light enters the frame (look left and down) the entire image brightens a bit. The problem is it can't be corrected by simply lowering the exposure. Other subtle parameters are effected as well. Kinda frustrating because I can't think of what it could be. There was nothing automatic about my settings during capture. So how could an image in a sequence exposure differently under the same conditions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I have had that kind of stuff happen to me as well.
Usually nothing you can do about it.

Probably what happens is that the light is reflecting inside the lens/body and adding glare/reflections to the whole image.
So you are pretty much hooped.

That sounds like a likely possibility. I will run it through the deflicker mode in LRTL3. Hopefully this will smooth it out.

did you cover the eye piece? that can be a source of light leaks. Either that or if there is a filter on the lens (but that is usually a ghost light similar in size to the source)

No I didn't cover the eye piece. I heard that helps in some cases. I think it may be light bouncing around the optics given that it is happening simultaneously with the car lights. Not sure how to avoid this other than going some place more remote. :)

Have you altered the "clarity" setting in Camera Raw?
This usually greatly enhances any brightness change, especially in a night-time timelapse.
It happened to me many time and it was just a matter on not using clarity at all (unfortunately...).

I did use clarity setting. That is unfortunate. I'll render another clip out to see the results. Love editing clarity for astral though. :/

I know, clarity is really good for astro-timelapse, but you can use it only if there are no sudden changes in light (like cars or airplanes).
Shadows/highlights effect in After Effect creates the same problems (even for daylight timelapses).

I think you are being affected by the lights on the bottom left of the picture (headlights?) striking the lens, then losing all your black levels because of it. No real easy way to fix it apart from editing those individual frames I suspect, or putting something in place next time you are shooting between the light source and your camera so there is no chance of a direct beam again.

By the way, to embed a vimeo post it needs to have the "WWW" in there that you do not typically get when copying the URL directly from vimeo. Have fixed the original post for you.
