I briefly looked for another thread answering this question but I was unable to find one.
I recently did a time-lapse and I guess I forgot to reset the file numbering so halfway through the TL the file numbers reset back to 0001.
So I now have a time-lapse I wish to put together but i have files (just an ex): 9012-9999 + 0001-0235. In that order.
Is the simplest way to do this create two separate videos and then combine them in say Final Cut?
Any help would be appreciated.

check out batch file renaming software, i like 'rename master'.. it get's a little tricky because you have to first add a zero to the lower series and a one to the upper series, but once you've done that you can put them together and renumber the entire series. It's of course annoying that most cams go 9999 then 0001 rather than 0000 thus the second step.

In Lightroom, you can sort by capture name, and then do a batch rename. I usually do custom name-sequence.

You should also be able to create a small batch, renaming files based upon their EXIF metadata, using the date contained within the EXIF.

file renaming is a good answer, but if you are working in Ae then you can put both sequences in separate folders, drag those folders in to Ae (they will show up as two sequences) and line them up on the timeline. quick and easy.

If you have Adobe CS then you can use "Bridge" to batch rename the files.

For me this is the way to go, fast and easy.

+1 I use bridge whenever this happens.
Now I just set my camera to auto restart the numbering sequence whenever the card is removed and I haven't had this problem again.
Obviously if I go over 1K shots I will but that is rare.

If you're using Lightroom:

- Sort your Library view by Capture Time
- Select all the photos in your sequence
- Library -> Rename Photos.

Create a naming rule that ends with the Sequence # (which can start at 1, or whatever number you like).

My workflow starts with viewing the files in Photo Mechanic (which by far is rated as the fastest RAW file viewer and popular with still photographers). If there are 2 folders (which means the filenames have been reset to #1) then I will batch rename the files in the first folder (takes seconds for a few hundred files) and then select all the images in the second folder and batch rename them. As long as you do not alter the sequence variables, the filename just rolls on.

I am usually done within 20 seconds and that includes typing out the new filename for the files so it may be something like 20140806_Timelapse_Melbourne_0001. Yes, you can type whatever you want as long as you have the last 4 digits.
