I just wanted to point out - your brother did a great job on the setup, and has been an excellent contributor to the OpenMoco project (he is 'inco' on OM.org, right?) - tell him to keep up the good work and I can't wait to see more!

Hi Shutterdrone.

Yes, Inco is my brother. 8-) We have a beautiful project with night-timelapse videos in June, and Inco is working hard to help create one device with incredible possibilities for timelapsers. I neither can't wait for try it.

Hi,

it looks good! :-)
I guess this a modified Meade head? If yes, how difficult is it to modify the hardware?

Best Regards
David

David,

Inco's mods were extensive, and likely to be very different from your needs. IIRC, beyond just replacing the existing motors with new, geared steppers, he also added an extra microcontroller for each motor, and made extensive software changes to the OM TLE to support this. I have to applaud him on the level of effort he put into the project, it was by no means a "simple" activity - not to mention the custom machining, etc. he did.

One can certainly retrofit a head for steppers with a moderate amount of machining, and then use the software as-is. Some up-coming development changes in the OM TLE will also allow you to convert the head as-is to an OM-based system without replacing the motors. Just a few new pieces of electronics and some re-wiring. Once I get done with the DP initial product launch (still working on finalizing the electronics for the DC motor controller), perhaps we'll get a chance to show how it can be done. But, since OM TLE is now going to support DC motors (to allow hybrid systems or upgrading legacy systems without massive re-work) it's going to be a piece of cake from the system perspective to tie in legacy, low-cost hardware.

Hi,

Chris, thanks for your detailed reply.
I guess I have to wait until you guys come up with a decent panning head. :(

The new video looks good, though the panning with the ultra wide angle gives me a headache. :?

Best Regards
David
