I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
But I've become a bit of a pansy I really have no interest in setting up in 33 degree temps then standing around while the shoot finishes. Plus here in the valley I live in we get an inverted weather situation and it creates a low cloud ceiling, kind of a bla looking sky, not that exciting. Anyone else have trouble getting up the strength to go stand around in cold temps?

Its a damed if you do and damed if you don't situation If you go you just might freeze to death or risk gear getting destroyed or if you don't go you just might miss that shot you been waiting for all year ? If i plan to go out in the elements 9/10 times nothing happens, a cloud will block the sun, rain and wind will drive me to another location by then its to late. I dont have the problem with -18c thats just insane...44c with fly's is the most extreme i have endured. Ah the joys of this obsession, i empty my trash on the mac each month and amongst that there would be at least a half a dozen clips that just don't cut the grade, I might only get to shoot 7-8 a month I wonder how many other guys shoot lots of clips and end up with 1 or 2 that make it to post ?

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
Yeah I know the feeling. I had the last 4 days off and was going to be out and shoot in the woods, but it was around 3°F here in Belgium at night and I've been sick as hell. Ended up NOT going at all because of this, usually when you go there's always something that goes wrong I think the key is just to get out there as much as possible, even if you have other things to do that day. All those hours combined will eventually end up in some really good clips, a lot of "okay" ones and some bad ones. But I think the important thing is, the more you go out, the more chance you'll have to end up with good clips Overhere it's been a nightmare the last few weeks, it was pouring rain for 2 or 3 weeks non stop, this week it snowed and the only nights you think you can go out and shoot, there's fog everywhere, so no clear skies haha. It's like the gods are taunting me lol

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
For the past six days Chronos and my Canon 60d have been in my basement documenting the process of a Banana rotting and testing to see how well 0.0045 inch movement intervals look.
its an easy way to feel productive while i do other things.

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
..and then Jack Ripper is inviting us all over for some mmmhome-baked banana bread (the blacker the bananas, the better). I've only made two timelapses in the winter - one *through* my windows, the other *on* my windows. I can handle the cold, but my camera/battery can't for any length of time. I'll often go for drives and take stills from the briefly-opened car window. And then it can just as easily be 104F/40C and humid here in the summer, which is a bit miserable too. Especially with the mosquitos. I have a vid from last Aug that always annoys me because it's missing a few frames due to running from the little bloodsuckers and getting too far from the camera with the intervalometer remote in my pocket. It's gonna be -16F/-27C tonight - brrr. But ahh, it was a balmy 3C and sunny on the weekend and I went and sat on a park bench :)

Ha, I tried to leave him on the hood of a stranger's car, but alas his head fell off in transit. Apparently I'm easily amused with a chunk of snow and a twig ;)

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
I know what you mean, I've been there during my vacation time this summer. I went to my hometown with the idea of shooting as much as I can, but eventually I was exhausted. On my last days there I was thinking about not going out and just spend more hours at home or doing something less "complicated" than walking in the middle of nowhere scouting for some cool shots. But then I thought "when I get back to my everyday routine I'll miss this", so I went out anyway (not to mention I'm now 700km from there).
Right now I'm processing the shots, and while After Effects renders my videos, I'm on Vimeo and I'm glad I didn't gave up! Everytime I see a timelapse makes me wanna go out and shoot the first thing that cross in from of me. I think I'm obsessed with timelapse haha.

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
For me, I just dont feel right unless my cameras are in action. I know the 5dii has a 200,000 or so shot life span, but I just cant justify having it and my lenses sleep for more then two day. It just would not make sense as I have invested so much time and work into acquiring them. If I were you I would start time lapsing factory processes in your area during cold times...if it gets cold enough I might point my cameras on some ice. Try some HDR in the fog perhaps? I dunno, for me it just feels weird not to shoot, i know you are feeling the same way.
hope that helps. Cheers!

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
I have been working on a 26 week project its now 34 weeks, a house build that will be auctioned off at the end for charity. Totally for the love of it and my little contribution towards the marketing. Thats kept me busy, up early before the builders get on site, sneaking out of work to retrieve the gear getting home and rendering out the shots...who knows what the shutter count is now??? a quick guess is over 50k. Trust me construction TL'S are not for the faint hearted.....nothing ever goes to plan, weather, builders not turning up, batteries going down, inverters frying (the cheap ones ) i even had an on site porta potty fall on my permanent camera enclosure during a storm hehe. Its nearly finished and cant wait to get back to the bush and sunsets and clouds. Hmm rotting bananas, snowmen and factory processing plants.....snowmen not an option in my neck of the woods, i could make one out of ice cream and ......nah what a waste of ice cream. At least the weather is nice down here in oz at the moment

Here's a few more ideas for shots: http://www.timelapseearth.com/p/time-lapse-earth-film-information.htmlIf you get a shot from the list, share it with me an perhaps you might want to become part of the crew for a feature length time lapse film?

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
With a full moon tonight I might have to put on warm clothes and make a go of it. I haven't used my new igus slider in a few weeks and I'm really wanting to shoot something! Heading out to Eastern Oregon this weekend for a little mini vacation. Just up the road where we stay the locals get together and stage a little family xc ski race and then a big bonfire. Here is a shot from last year- Thought it would be fun to try and stay sober enough to get a timelapse of the events this year.

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
Sometimes I'm jealous of you guys who have stuff like snow and drifting fog to make cool timelapses of. Just too many days of relentless clear blue skies, warm turquoise oceans and golden sand round here. But then next week a cyclone might take my roof off. Wouldn't need to speed that up to make an exciting video Kit

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
That looks like a nice spot ladukebob - and a damn big bonfire! I'm not sure I could live somewhere that didn't get snow in the winter.. the dramatic changes in seasons is just too cool. But the snow could bugger off by the end of Feb, as far as I'm concerned (and it never does) .. and this is the forecast for tomorrow: Clearing late in the morning. Wind becoming north 40 km/h gusting to 60 near noon then diminishing to 20 in the evening. Temperature falling to minus 24 in the afternoon. Wind chill minus 37. So, Kit, I'm gonna hate on you for a little bit right now, if that's alright ;) (it sounds lovely..) And yup, tornados are scaaaary business.. one of my very first timelapses had a funnel cloud in it and it's too bad it turned out so crappy, but I'm not really pining for another opportunity!
I wonder how Jack Ripper's banana is doing... ;)

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
We visited Banff (the new one in Canada, not the original in Scotland) a few years back in January. Truly beautiful. Having been raised in a country where snow usually means slush and soaking wet clothes, I hadn't realised that snow is actually dry!

I could probably name you at least ten different kinds of snow off the top of my head ;) (Hmph, weather forecast revised to -39C tonight.) Banff *is* stunning.. I've been many times. So hey, you can solve a mystery for me: I noticed that Banff is *chock full* of Aussies - why is that? Do you all get the glossy travel brochure in the mail or something?

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
I was still a pommie back then, hadn't though of emigrating at the time. The current rush of Aussie visitors could have something to do with the exchange rate. Foreign travel has never been cheaper and Banff is on the right side of the continent for travelers from here not wanting too long a flight. Might also be the novelty factor. Go somewhere COMPLETELY different. New Zealand is nearer but Canada is probably cheaper right now and may form part of a larger tour of the American continent. We'd love to go back to Banff in the summer but I doubt that will ever happen. Kit Sent that then realised: You CAN go skiing in Australia, the Blue Mountains have snow in winter. Maybe the keen skiers like to escape the blazing summer heat at home by enjoying a Canadian winter. There is Europe, but many of you speak a similar language to Australian

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
Hey, look at that, another Aussie who's been to Banff! Ha, Movingfish, everbody who's been there has the 'de rigueur' photo of the mountain at the end of the street - but it's just so damn pretty! What I'd really noticed is that a lot of the ski/hotel staff are Aussies (ie living there, not just tourists). But I've travelled enough to know that Canada *is* a cheap destination. Personally, I think Banff is better in the winter. It's really busy/touristy in the summer and I think there's less to do (except maybe hike or pet the mountain goats), especially if you like to ski. Can't swim in any of the lakes anywhere in the Rockies either - waaaay too cold! It doesn't normally get as cold in Banff in the winter as it does here (currently -31C with the windchill factor - brisk!). Language issues: I had to look up "pommie" - previously Brit before being sent off to the penal colony and "Nullabour" - the world's biggest single chunk of limestone. (That banana must be dust by now...)

So im heading across the biggest chunk of treeless limestone in the world Cant wait to see the banana TL ...or am i just weird

Re: I want to go shoot something, I really do.............
One of our enduring memories of Banff is the outdoor swimming pool at the back of the Banff Springs hotel. The water was 40c and the surrounding air -18c. The waiters bring you a glass of chilled white wine wearing mufflers and woolen gloves and you have to drink it before it gets cold Then, just as you start thinking you're getting too hot in that water, you realise your hair is frozen solid. A wonderful place.

London is much the same. I always recon there are two types of people working in London hotels: those who do NOT speak English as a first language and the Australians. Hotel work is a great way for young people to see the world and pay their way.
