A new version of the 60D called the 60Da with increased sensitivity in the H-alpha range of the IR spectrum....

That is awesome!

I had been trying to find a Canon 20da for a long time, however so few were made they are real hard to find. I better start saving up.

Adorama is taking pre-orders I got an email from them last night too.

There are places that will modify your existing camera. So that is an option too.

Isn't the rated ISO here lower than the 5D3?

The only reason this camera really appeals to me is that, in theory, you might be able to gut it and put a PL mount on it, then use very fast PL glass like Master Primes.

it is a 60d re-tooled for astrophotography.

im pretty sure it uses the same sensor it always had, i would be shocked to see that it had better high ISO performance. However, im sure it would beat the 5Dmk3 for astro-photography because of the difference filters used.

Quote:
The improved infrared-blocking filter is a modification suited specifically toward astronomy enthusiasts to achieve a hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity that is approximately three times higher than that of a normal Canon DSLR camera.

Could you modify a camera? sure, im sure you could swap the filters and such. But you could also kiss your warranty goodbye. Its nice to have a warranty covered straight-from-the-factory options. I would like to see if they have other tweaks in the firmware as well as the filter change.

this is basically updated option to the old Canon 20D-a

it would be very interesting to see a side by side with the Mark 3 and this camera.

Jack, if you get one in July when i get my Mark 3 perhaps we could do a comparison shoot.

you can easily modify any camera to do this.

Nobody said you couldn't, but if they screw up, good luck getting it fixed under warranty. I'm not sure I understand why you would have such distaste for this. Nobody said you have to buy it. ;) I think it is pretty sweet that Canon is willing to even offer this. Who knows, maybe someday they will a camera optimized for timelapse.

I assume you're talking to me? I don't have a distaste for the camera. I'm simply giving my opinion. I said it might be interesting for a PL conversion, because of the dense pixels on APS-C. But again, the ISO rating is quite low. And since I don't do deep-space astro, it is of limited interest to me.

Why doesn't Canon put its latest Digic V processor in a new camera? Its 2012. This is an issue to me with this cam.
Its a great idea otherwise.
